THE RHYTHM STUDIO INTERVIEWS ASSAF SEEWI OF CHICANE

Assaf Seewi of Chicane gives the Rhythm Studio a unique insight into his world, from live shows with Tom Jones to wild stick tricks, meet the most entertaining drummer on the planet

How's it all going and what have you been up to musically in the last couple of months?

I'm part of a production team by the name of Frivalous and we're just finishing a few tracks, when they come out you'll hopefully hear about it…

Playing with Chicane has led to some high profile performances, are any of them particularly memorable?

Manila was great as the venue was completely packed, crammed with people and the energy was intense…also all the dates with Tom Jones were of course a pleasure. We jammed with him at soundcheck and he was about as cool as you imagine Sir Tom to be, a true legend…

How did you develop your incredible showmanship?

Juggling came first or at the same time with drumming. I couldn't resist combining the two, so slowly you just keep adding a trick here and there…it keeps you busy while the other musicians argue whether the inverted minor seven flat five chord in bar 33 is putting too much stress on the altered tritonic substitutions…

You've become a bit of a uTube phenomenon, did you ever imagine that your videos would get over a million views?

Of course I imagined this, why not?

How did you meet DJ Walde, your beatboxing battle partner?

We did workshops together at the Roundhouse and just had some fun afterwards which led to him joining me on a few gigs around London…

You've already released a lot of you're own material, any more albums on the way?

Yes, I'm in the process of a whole new album as we speak and when it's finished it will be something great, truly great!

How did your DVD "Gimme That Beat" come about?

The idea came from the producer Thompson Ataha who had seen me perform at Dingwalls in London. He liked the show and convinced me that a DVD had to be done. He also was kind enough to weed through a mountain of drumming ideas and pick what was most likely to entertain people.

What can we expect to see from Assaf Seewi over the next 12 months?

There's a few things planned: There should be a clinics/performance tour, various releases with Frivalous and of course my own CD featuring my new songs should be out at some point..
