THE RHYTHM STUDIO FOUNDATION HOSPITAL WORKSHOPS

The Rhythm Studio Foundation finances a program of inspirational fortnightly music workshops for children on the paediatric wards of Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

Each year, RSF makes over 80 weekly visits to the paediatric wards interacting with over 500 patients and carers. Workshops and bedside visits for patients featured musical games, percussion, ukelele and singing. We help develop a community feeling on the wards and a happier environment for young patients and their parents.

As children become hospitalised they could regress very quickly. They lose interest in their environment, socialising and become non-verbal. The Rhythm Studio Foundation has changed the lives of these patients. I have witnessed smiles, singing and playing along with the musical instruments, Family members are asking when “the music therapy ladies will be coming” in such enthusiastic voices, this lessening the anxiety that families are feeling.
— Sharon Charane (Snr Health Play Specialist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital)
The thing I love most about the music workshops is how often it brings children’s and families together. Often, a family may come and have a look at the music happening by the bedside next to them and before you know it, there are two families and two sets of children who may never have met properly, singing and dancing together!

YOUNG PATIENTS PROGRAMME

The Young Patients Programme supports 6 young patients a year to have weekly online individual music lessons. Referred to us by the paediatric team at St Mary’s Hospital, we provide lessons to young people with long term health conditions, who have limited opportunities to take part in music-making activities.

The young patients programme began as part of our Hospitals’ work, in lieu of our face-to-face visits on the wards. The scheme aimed to support young people with medical conditions who were forced to shield due to Covid-19. Our partners Imperial Health Charity identified patients who would benefit from one-to-one music tuition delivered via zoom.

For us as a family, Drew being give this wonderful opportunity has been brilliant, a bit of sun on a gloomy situation. He’s looked forward to every lesson and Kaja is an amazing teacher. Online lessons have taken nothing away from the experience, lessons are well structured & Kaja is patient, enthusiastic and brings out the best in Drew.
