RSF Scholarship Profiles - Myla

The Rhythm Studio Foundation Scholarship is an annual award aimed at talented and passionate 11 to 18 year-old musicians in need of financial support to help reach their full potential. The scheme is now in its 8th year and in total we have made over 50 awards of between 50% -100% of music tuition fees. Many of our Alumni have gained places at leading music colleges and universities to continue their musical journey.

As we welcome our new group of RSF music scholars for 2020-21, we say goodbye to a number of long-standing scholarship holders who have spent several years at the Rhythm Studio. They are now joining our growing group of Alumni and we’d like to share some of their stories with you as well as wish them good luck in the future.

Myla Carmen

Myla has held a RSF Scholarship for 7 years. She’s a multi-instrumentalist with a focus on singing, piano and guitar. Primarily a solo artist, Myla was crowned Future Sounds Champion at Bush Hall in January 2020 and will be going into RSF Patron and producer Guy Chamber’s studio to record a couple of her songs as well as playing a gig at the Yamaha store.

“Trying to narrow down my music taste is really next to impossible”, she says. “Saying that, I do really love rock bands from the 80’s like Motley Crue and Van Halen….Overall, if the song is good regardless of genre I will listen to it.” In her song writing, Myla’s influences include FKA Twigs, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Nina Simone, Alanis Morissette, Benjamin Clementine and Joni Mitchell. “All their music is so individual to themselves. The atmospheres and stories they create within their music really intrigues me.”

Myla has been a regular performer over the years, gigging around London as well as playing festivals. “I would say my favourite gigs would have to be Battle of The Bands with Author in 2019, The Rhythm Studio Foundation Dinner in 2018 and Future Sounds 2020”.

Myla is in her final year at Italia Conti and plans to work professionally in Musical Theatre. In the future she would also love to release an album or two and even write a score for a musical.

“I’d just like to say I can’t thank you enough to everyone at The Rhythm Studio for all their support and dedication to helping musicians including myself to see their potential. I honestly would be nowhere near where `I am now without the help of The Rhythm studio. And thank you to Maja for bring a brilliant teacher and putting up with my crazy ideas!”
