Mathew Follis is a Welsh jazz and improvising guitarist. After beginning guitar studies at age ten Mathew instantly found a need to learn as much as possible on the instrument. Beginning with rock and pop, shoegaze, blues, and finally finding his place within jazz and free improvised music at the age of 16.
He moved to London to pursue his Bachelor of Music at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019. Being surrounded by musician likeminded musicians throughout and into his Masters of Music, also at Goldsmiths, focusing on performance ecology and embodied practice, led to the release of his debut trio album ‘Crosstalk’and free improvised EP ‘A Series of Improvisations’.
Mathew is also working as a session musician from several different up and coming artists in London, including Alex Apolline and Peri Rae, with performances at The Lower Third, KOKO, Oceanfest, Lakefest, and many more.
Mathew’s teaching style has an emphasis on practical experimentation and embodiment of musical knowledge, with a healthy touch of music theory and technical critique.
